Lynda La Plante (writer of the series) is at the top of her game
I bought the complete series from Amazon.co.uk several years ago. The series Trial & Retribution was written by Lynda La Plante. She is a Bafta award winner for her detective stories. I loved the series especially the early ones. The series is well written, good acting, and difficult to stop watching. The lead detective DCI Mike Walker (David Hayman) does a excellent job of convincing the audience that he really cares about each victim and he isn't going to stop until he finds the perpetrator of the crime. Each set within the series is interesting and diverse. It is a great fine for and American audience. If you love Inspector Morse and Prime Suspect you will love this series also.
wow
This show was insanely good. It's not like any other crime drama I have seen in that you get inside the lives of the victims' loved ones, of the police trying to solve the case and of the attorneys representing the accused. There are endless surprises and you really just cannot guess if the guy is guilty or not. I am so happy I happened upon this and that there are several seasons for me to get lost in. Highly recommend.
Worthwhile British crime drama
I enjoyed this series although not everyone will like it. As others have commented it is filled with top notch performances and some great drama. The show (every season) documents the investigation of a murder (or series of murders), apprehension of suspect(s), and the subsequent trial. As the seasons develop the writers delve into the lives of the detectives (most notably Pat North and Michael Walker). In later seasons they become involved and the show documents the terrain of their relationship.
In addition to the murder plots there are often snippets of people's lives: people connected to the victims, people connected to the suspects and the lives of the investigators and their staff. It is a wide roaming show in this sense, but as it always finds its emotional mark, despite these interludes which do not necessarily advance the plot, it is these elements of the show that give it such emotional power.
It is the conclusions that sometimes fail to deliver. I do...
